Square Dance Club Based in Orange County

Our Story

The Orange Coast Lariats club is dedicated to enjoying, promoting and preserving the uniquely American art of Modern Western Square Dancing. The Orange Coast Lariats square dance club was formed in May of 1998 by the merger of the Lariats and the Orange Coast Squares.

We dance for the friendship, the challenge, the exercise … but most of all for the fun! We hold club dances on the second Friday each month, featuring many nationally known callers. We offer weekly classes from September to May to introduce beginners to our favorite dance form. Our class sessions also feature line dancing between the square dance tips.

Check us out, and we’d love to make another new friend.

WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?

What We Do

We Dance

We host monthly club dances with professional callers and a professional line/round dancer. Couples and singles are all welcome; our dances include a singles rotation to provide partners for single guests. We also visit other clubs’ dances to socialize with the greater square dance community and to support squaredancing activities. .

We Teach

We have an active class program to introduce new dancers to our favorite form of dance, and to teach them to square dance in a fun, friendly and supportive atmosphere. Our teacher, Steve Woodard, has many years of experience calling square dances and teaching new dancers. Club member Sheri Bolton teaches line dances between the square dance tips during our classes.

We Socialize

When you square dance, you dance with seven partners. Square dancing is an inherently social art, and our friendships don’t end when the music stops. We have many non-dancing activities as a club. We attend plays and concerts… We enjoy cultural destinations such as the Nethercutt Museum in Sylmar and the Pageant of our Lord performance in Long Beach. We gather for club parties such as our annual dice game party and our President’s annual Christmas party. Check out the photos of square dancers acting goofy.

We Travel and Camp

We love to travel together as a club. We go to both square dance events and to camp and socialize as we commune with nature. Annual square dance events that are on our club calendar are the Spring Fling weekend in Solvang and the Riverside County Square And Round Dance Festival in Indio, where we dance with more than a thousand fellow dancers. Some of us combine both when we travel to the Fun Valley Resort in south central Colorado to dance, to enjoy the resort’s many activities and to visit the many scenic and historical sites near the resort. Check out the photos from some of our past adventures.

Our Gallery

Square Dancing is a wonderful way to exercise and make new friends of all ages while having a lot of fun. The friendly members of the OC Lariats go out of their way to make us feel welcome and encourage us as we learn each new square dance call. Though they are great dancers themselves, they don't mind dancing at the Basic Level with those of us who are still Beginners. There's no better way to have fun!

When I first entered Orange Coast Lariat’s beginner dance class, one of the experienced dancers confided in me that these Orange Coast Lariats Club members have, over time, become his best friends. Now, 20 years later, I have been drawn into the same circle of friends.  The square dancers of my club have also become my close friends. Besides dancing, dance festivals, and class support, we also share in many other activities. I always look forward each week to seeing my square dance friends. It gives me a warm glow.

I have been square dancing for 12 years now. It is so much more than dancing. It is great physical and mental exercise. The people are very friendly and outgoing. From my friends at square dancing I have gained many more hobbies and activities such as quilting, bunco and camping.

You never know where square dance friendships may take you. For a group of Orange Coast Lariats, guided by an OCL who is from Japan, it led to a three-week trip to Japan, capped by dancing and celebrating with the Tokyo Square Dance Club on their 50th anniversary!
