Travel & Camping

We love to travel together as a club. We go to both square dance events and to camp and socialize …

The OCLs travel to Solvang, Indio and Loughlin, Arizona for annual square dance festivals. The Solvang Spring Fling weekend featuring the one and only Buddy Weaver in the charming Solvang Memorial Hall is always a sell-out. When we’re not dancing, Solvang’s shops and restaurants are just steps from the dance floor. And … Solvang is in the middle of the Santa Ynez wine country.

The Riverside County Square and Round Dance Festival, RIVCO, brings over a thousand folks to dance at the Riverside County fairground in Indio every November, where a half dozen of the county’s best callers keep us movin’.  RIVCO is a great three-day party, and other attractions while you’re in the Coachella valley, from downtown Palm Springs to Joshua Tree National Park, are right around the corner.

But Everything doesn’t have to involve square dancing. We also have an annual campout at the Puddingstone Lake campground in San Dimas. We don’t dance, but we have a heck of a lot of fun! And it’s just a short drive from Orange County, so

A bunch of us shared a new adventure last August when we traveled to Fun Valley in Colorado. Fun Valley is an all-inclusive resort on the Rio Grande river near South Fork, with cabins and RV hook-ups, featuring a log dance hall and restaurant and all manner of outdoor activities. We made friends with a group of square dancers from Texas while we danced to the calling of Ken Bowers and Melton Luttrell from Texas.

And it’s just a short drive from Orange County, so non-campers can easily join us during the day. Some of us stay for a week-end and others spend a full week. And we all keep busy … playing games, eating, admiring the lake view, chatting, and, especially, loafing. Oh, we also pet each others’ dogs quite a bit.
